该细胞是1983年由Gazdar AF和Oie H从一名患有肺腺鳞癌的73岁白人男性患者的胸壁肿物中分离得到；肿块的获取先于治疗。该细胞表达与正常肺组织水平相当的p53，没有大的结构DNA的异常。角蛋白和波形蛋白阳性，神经丝三联蛋白阴性；表达多种鳞状细胞分化标志，如谷氨酰胺转移酶活性、被膜素的产生和交联包膜的形成。
